Although Halloween is mainly about costumes and candy, Halloween attractions are becoming more popular in Hawaii, including creepy clowns, zombies and monsters.
The most popular and nationally-ranked attraction in Hawaii is the haunted Waipahu Plantation. Visitors enter through a pitch-dark tunnel and spend about 25 minutes walking through house after house on site.About 60 actors are hired to participate in the haunting.Tickets are $15, $20 and $30. Because of the fear factor, children under the age of 13 are not recommended to participate.
Senior Ashley Barley said, “The platation’s performance was very realistics. I am not easily scared but the makeup and effects were so realistic I was running from every actor. The plantation was a professional production and I look forward to doing it next year.”
Dole Plantation’s garden maze also turns into a Trail of Terror in October with Victorian-era ghosts, gas-masked men, bloody zombies and a chainsaw-wielding maniac. The maze takes about 20 minutes to finish because it is filled with dead ends and numerous monsters. The attraction continues with the Nightmare Express, a 20-minute train ride around the plantation fields. The agenda continues with the 13 Haunted House attraction, with special effects including air canons, fog machines and other special effects. Tickets are $13 dollars per attraction.
The Gunstock Ranch in Laie hires more than 25 zombie actors for its special attraction. It is a 20-minute long hay ride during which zombies attack. Tickets are $20 per ride.
Junior Ye Eun Lee said, “ Hawaii does not have huge corporations to fund these attractions like the attractions at universal studio but the attractions are still fun and thrilling. I get scared every time and look forward to this time of year every time.”
Hawaii’s haunted attractions are sure to scare. All attractions are recommended for those who enjoy thrilling special effects and a rush of adrenaline.
