Teenage girls are infamous for spreading gossip. Gossip increases the possibility of spreading lies and can end friendships. It can also ruin what was once strong relationships. Sadly, no rules or regulations can restrict the spreading of lies.
Gossip is almost never accurate and therefore can be detrimental to a victim’s reputation. This can ruin the perspectives others have of an individual. Hearsay defeats the unity in a group and can fracture structures.
Gossip is highly detrimental to a community especially because it is spread by word of mouth and stories change as they are passed from person to person. With each person it passes new stories are created. As gossip spreads, it is often changed, ultimately expanding false messages.
Gossip destroys trust within a community. The spreading of false, fabricated stories has the power to disassemble the structure of a community. It is because rumors are usually not true that lies being spread are out of the victim’s control. The victim is helpless.Rumors are uncontrollable and nothing can stop their spread.
One may argue that rumors do not make much of a negative effect on a community. Those agreeing with that statement are usually the ones spreading the rumors. However, rumors can be traced back to those who spread them, also negatively affecting the spreader. Rumors damage a community, both those who are the subject of the rumors and those who spread them.
Gossip and rumors have great potential to ruin reputations and at an all-girls school, false hearsay is almost impossible to stop. Whispers turn into comments that turns into conversation that turn into more rumors. Gossip is never beneficial to a person or a community and must be stopped.
