The National Honor Society (NHS) has plans to become more active in school and the community. Under the direction of Dr. Kira Krend, the club has made changes to the requirements of club membership in order to keep members involved.
President Dominique Dold said, “Since our goal this year is to get more participation in events, we changed the requirement so that a NHS student has to attend 80 percent of events. We also have a few mandatory activities, such as Loliana Hale and Science Symposium.”
This year NHS members will be participating in school fairs, fall and spring open houses, band concerts, admissions events, Loliana Hale Christmas and Easter activities, Science Symposium and graduation.
The number of events that each member has to participate in to remain in the club has increased dramatically from last year from four to 13.
Junior Kaela Fiesta said, “I think that with the greater number of events that we have to participate in, we are truly upholding the oath that we all took when we were admitted into NHS.”
Students will also attend seminars throughout the year to build upon the values focused on in NHS which are scholarship, leadership, character and service.
Krend said, “We will be inviting community members who are knowledgeable and experienced in that specific value to enhance our student’s understanding of the topic. This will hopefully lead students to practice these values in the real world.”
In addition to the community service projects and seminars, members of the club are encouraged to tutor.
Senior Kassandra Kitagawa said, “Right now we are going through the process of learning how to tutor other students and figuring out what subjects we would teach best. When we are done organizing, we will be tutoring about one to two times a week.”
