The national average for the SAT is 1500. Scores near 1500 enable students to be eligible for a fair number of colleges. Scores below 1100 are considered low for any four-year college. Admittance into colleges becomes more difficult as scores decrease.
Senior Ashley Barley said, “ I researched colleges and many of them accept scores like 1550 or 1500. Before taking the test, my goal was to score as high as I possibly could but it scared me because I know that if I do not score around 1500, then my chances of being admitted into a decent college would not be good.”
A good high school transcript can sometimes compensate for low scores. Solid grades and GPA allow college admissions to overlook low SAT scores although remedial classes may be required.
College counselor, Randall Fong said, “ SAT scores are very important to colleges but as long as students have a fair score, colleges also take good grades and GPA into consideration. If students are not good test takers, I advise them to try their best to achieve good grades.”
SAT scores can be increased with study aids such as SAT test prep books and SAT classes.
Alumna Danielle Aio said, “ Taking the SAT test prep classes at Sacred Hearts helped me to increase my SAT test scores. I recommend taking SAT preparatory classes as soon as possible because the sooner one understands SAT and begins studying, the better scores one will receive.”
Higher SAT scores also allow students to be eligible for various scholarships including presidential scholarships or tuition aid scholarships.
