Based on the book by Cassandra Clare, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,”recounts a teen’s discovery of her identity in a fanciful and unknown world.
Clary Fray (Lily Collins) has a presumably normal life until the disappearance of her mother (Lena Headey). Clary discovers she is a descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, warriors who protect the world from Downworld demons. She joins forces with another Shadowhunter, Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower), and enters the mysterious dimension of legendary creatures.
The movie has plot twists, action and character tension but fails to live up to the book’s expectations. Clare’s novel built up a large following, yet fans will be disappointed by the film’s screenplay which does not do the book justice.
“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”is rated PG-13 for intense scenes of violence and action. The film is recommended for teenagers and young adults.
