Lee Daniels’ film “The Butler” attracted audiences of all ages to see Forest Whitaker portray a White House butler through eight presidential administrations, including that of the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s.
Cecil Graines (Whintaker) escapes slavery in the Deep South as a young man and relocates to Washington where he becomes a staff butler in the White House. The story is told from Graines’point of view against the broader picture of the struggle of African-Americans to overcome racism and civil inequality.
The cast includes Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey and Jane Fonda.
“The Butler” is a two-hour movie that features 30 years of presidents and political challenges of the times, including the John F. Kennedy assassination. The rich historic background will not only appeal to history buffs but also to mature teenage audiences.
