Water safety should be an important concern for all people near or surrounded by water.
Recently, tourists and locals alike have been drowning in ever-increasing numbers. A Japanese visitor drowned at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Lagoon earlier in the month, contributing to the toll of over 100 drowning deaths over the past decade.
Incidents involving tourists often occur due to lack of knowledge about the surroundings, including the strength of currents, dangers of waves or the invisible sandy bottom.
Although residents, many Hawaii locals share the same naive attitudes when it comes to the ocean. Many are overconfident in their abilities, due to their upbringing in these islands. Arrogance kills as seen through the too frequent drownings of Hawaii natives.
Recognizing the power and capabilities of the ocean is essential to avoid such mishaps. Not doing so is irresponsible and can result in fatal consequences. A realistic perception of abilities must be held by those who enter the ocean to increase their chances of survival.
