Many colleges mandate students with prior language experience to take a placement exam. Seniors in Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish recently took the placement exam for the University of Hawaii (UH) Manoa.
The placement exam is taken before registration in order to determine the appropriate level of proficiency and skill of the student. It also gives students the opportunity to earn credits. One can earn from three to 16 credits if one places in courses numbered above 202. However, if one is places in courses 301 or higher, one can get 33 credits.
Seniors Emily Ko, Xylia Lydgate, Jill Baxter and Kelli McGhiey placed in courses over 301.
Ko said, “The placement exam was not a challenge for me because of the rigorous practice I get during Spanish class.”
Although not all of them will be attending UH in the fall, the students demonstrated their proficiency and skills with the Spanish language on the test
AP Spanish teacher Susan Solomine said, “These ladies have constantly worked diligently throughout the year. I am very proud of their accomplishments and their dedication to the language.”
Lydgate said, “I felt very prepared because everything on the exam was material that we already covered throughout the years of taking Spanish at the Academy.”
