“42” documents the story of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American major league baseball player. Robinson was signed in 1947 by the Brooklyn Dodgers and then-manager Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford).
Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) faces many challenges, most notably racism from his teammates, fans and other teams. Rickey advises Robinson not to fight back. By following Rickey’s advice, Robinson allows his athletic talent to shine and speak for itself. As Robinson’s popularity grows, he becomes one of the most popular players on the team. Robinson went on to make history and win the Rookie of the Year award, changing the game of baseball forever.
“42” is a touching and respectful tribute to a man who succeeded despite the hate and prejudice against him and to the man who had enough courage to sign the first black baseball player in a culture that opposed him. It is also heartbreaking testimony to how much a man can take in the face of adversity and how hope and courage always overcome hatred.
