Junior Conner Chung has been chosen the new Battalion Cadet Commander of the Punahou Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program.
“As the battalion’s new commander, I am in charge of all cadets in the Punahou Battalion. This includes students from Punahou and ‘magnet’ cadets from all schools who participate in the JROTC program. I also distribute information to everyone, do paperwork for the Battalion, and various other jobs to help my cadets,” said Chung.
Chung was chosen by the Battalion Commander Board which consisted of Senior Army Instructor (S.A.I) Lt. Col. Robert Takao, Army Instructor (A.I) Command Sgt. Major Al Mobley and this year’s Battalion Cadet Commander (B.C) Major Stephanie Ramos. Chung was interviewed along with three other cadets.
“I found out about my position as Battalion Commander an hour and a half after my B.C Board. After all applicants were interviewed, the S.A.I, A.I, and current B.C took time to discuss and choose a new commander. All applicants were called in and I was told then,” said Chung.
Chung will be honored and promoted to her new position at the Punahou Battalion’s award ceremony on May 8.
“I must say that it was quite a shock when I received the news. My friends were always joking about me being Battalion Commander- all 4 feet 11 inches of me. I guess it was just funny and ironic to me, the shortest person in the Battalion, leading the Battalion, but I am happy with my new position,” said Chung.
Chung hopes to accomplish her goals for the Punahou JROTC program through her position as Battalion Commander.
“As Battalion Commander, I hope to accomplish a better line of communication between all cadets, polish up the battalion as a whole and keep up the camaraderie between all the cadets,” said Chung.
