Six Academy students will participate in the 24th Annual Hawaii Physics Olympics from 8:30 a.m to 12 p.m on Feb. 16 at Kapiolani Community College.
This event is jointly sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers – Hawaii Chapter, the Engineering Club at UH and Kapiolani Community College Society of Physics Students.
Twenty-eight teams will compete. Academy participants are senior Rachel Stollenmaier, juniors Mara Gillis, Hulali Alford and Aimy Ung, and sophomores Mahina Cavalieri and Dominique Bontog. They will be competing against teams from McKinley, Hanalani, Kamehameha, Farrington, Maryknoll, Mid-Pacific Institute and Kaiser High Schools.
The teams of students will participate in five events based on concepts in physics. Except for the cart joust, the events are not announced until the day of the Physics Olympics, but they are based on physics concepts, including magnetism, pendulum motion, waves, optics, energy and heat.
Observers are welcome, but they cannot answer questions or help students.
