At Sacred Hearts, service clubs volunteer time during the holiday season
to lend a hand to others who are less fortunate.
Junior Kauionalani Kekuawela said, “ Doing service that the school provides is a fun way to spend time doing productive things but is also enjoyable because of the company of fellow students of the Academy.”
Leo club is making Christmas cards that will be sent to Afghanistan. Members hope that the cards will lift the spirits of soldiers stationed abroad.
Leo club adviser, Whitney Miyahira, said, “ It’s just something small to support our soldiers and show them we appreciate them.”
Interact club will be accompanying children, who received gift cards to Walmart donated by the Ala Moana Rotary club to buy clothes and other necessities.
Each year Academy homerooms in grades 7-12 “adopt” children at Loliana Hale, a transitional shelter for families. A total of 82 children have been adopted and students will be giving toys, clothing and gift cards along with other presents.
Sophomore Jamie Toler said, “Every child deserves to get presents on Christmas and we can be their Santa Claus.”
On Dec. 19, the Outreach Unity and Renewal Club (OUR), Interact club and the “LIFErs” will go to Loliana Hale to distribute the presents. A Santa Claus distributes the gifts. The clubs will be singing Christmas carols with the children and will be providing Christmas cookies and punch.
