Former Governor Linda Lingle visited Sacred Hearts Academy on Oct. 17 to speak to students and faculty.
Currently running for the U.S. Senate, Lingle spoke about her personal history and answered students’ questions.
Lingle arrived in the islands in 1975 after graduating with a degree in Journalism. She started her political career on Maui where she served as Maui County mayor, council member and chair of the Hawaii Republican Party.
In 2002, she became the first Republican governor of Hawaii since the departure of Governor William F. Quinn in 1962. She was the first female governor of Hawaii.
The forum allowed students to become more familiar with Lingle’s campaign and goals. As senator, Lingle wants to reduce the national debt, help pass the Akaka Bill and provide a better future for Hawaii’s youth.
Although students cannot yet vote, Lingle made a point to express to students that when the time comes, it is important to be an informed voter and that every vote counts.
Junior Ashley Barley said, “My family is Democratic but after listening to what Linda Lingle has to offer, she convinced me that she has good priorities and intentions for Hawaii.”
Students can be more informed by researching Lingle and her opponent Mazie Hirono’s platforms.
Hirono and Lingle have previously been opponents in the race for governor.
Junior Elizabeth Serrao said, “Lingle is a very personable person but she left out some of the important problems that occurred while she was our governor.”
