Sacred Hearts Academy held its first 5210 Wellness Festival, promoting healthy dietary habits and fun exercises to promote the overall theme of living long and healthy lives on Sept. 8.
Hawaii Speed and Quickness demonstrated easy activities that youth can do to get a full hour of exercise each day, including leap frog, freeze tag and mini races.
An associate of “Hawaii Speed and Quickness said, “The best way to get young children active and exercising is to show them that it can be fun and exciting.”
Another associate Maya said, “Exercising in general benefits all in the category of life span. One hour of exercise keeps people healthy and away from fatigue or other health problems. Exercising has a positive after-effect. After the completion of a workout, people tend to feel pumped up, happy and accomplished. It’s a good feeling and it serves as good motivation for people to continue to exercise.”
Exercise is only one part of maintaining healthy lifestyles. An hour of exercise goes hand-in-hand with healthy eating habits. According to the food pyramid, a person should eat a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
Fresh Aloha Direct is a program that allow customers convenient access to five servings of fruits and vegetables through purchases made on their web site. The fruits and vegetables are all locally grown. The program promotes healthy living, supports local farmers and practices sustainability.
“Our online-based program allows people to order from a variety of fruits and vegetables. We also include unique recipes that use the vegetables and fruits that we have to offer. There are benefits to those who subscribe to us, such as free tickets to Aloun farm’s pumpkin patch,” said Michael, an associate of Fresh Aloha Direct.
Fresh Aloha Direct encourages healthy lifestyles as a family effort. The program promotes family gardens by offering vegetables that grow well in Hawaii’s climate.
“Our main goal is to influence future generations to be healthy and to teach the keikis sustainability. Our website encourages customers to start their own garden in the convenience of their own yards,” said Michael.
The many activities and informational booths at the festival kept Sacred Hearts Academy’s families busy and entertained.
Junior Ashley Barley said, “The festival was really fun. It motivated me to want to be more healthy. The turnout was really successful and I would definitely attend again.”
The event was successful in promoting the main goal- to encourage students and families to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables, to limit screen time to a maximum of two hours, to exercise for one hour every day and to drink zero added sugar drinks.
