Twenty-seven percent of the four billion mobile devices in the world today are smartphones. Smartphones fuse computation and communication needs into a single device. Smartphones allow users to install, configure and run a variety of programs, known as apps, including social media, business and entertainment news, search tools, travel sites and a camera.
Junior Ashley Barley uses her phone for many purposes.
“The apps that I use the most are Facebook and Tumblr. Since my Facebook app sends me a notification if someone posts on my wall or messages me, it has been easier for me to keep in touch with family and friends,” she said.
Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter are popular social apps. The Facebook and Tumblr applications allow people to view and execute the same features that are on the regular site in a condensed form.
Instagram is a photograph-based social network. Users enjoy the personal photos that are shared with followers. On Instagram, followers consist of friends and family from other social networking sites and possibly even celebrities.
Twitter allows users to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages that are posted to their profiles and are searchable on Twitter search.
Apps can even help students do better in school.
“Cram” is designed with self-made flashcards and multiple choice tests that help retain important information. The application “myHomework” is useful for students who are forgetful because the app sends notifications to the user when due dates approach.
Sophomore Haley Clark said, “I think that apps are really helpful. I appreciate the applications that deal with school. I recently downloaded an app for Edline, and it is really useful to check my grade updates.”
Apps also allow people to do their tasks quickly while on the go.
Freshman Nicole Roland said, “I downloaded a food app called ‘Urban Spoon’ because it displays the top-rated places to eat in areas I am in. It lists restaurants from most to least recommended by the customers. ”
Theology teacher Cristina Smith believes that upgrading to a smartphone is extremely beneficial.
“The apps that I use most often are my Tumblr, Facebook and Instagram. I check my app ‘Breaking News’ instead of reading the newspaper because it keeps me updated with the latest news. Also, ‘Gas Buddy’ helps me find the cheapest gas around,” she said.
The variety of available apps to smartphone users is ample. For every task that needs to be done, there is probably an app out there for it. Applications keep people entertained, productive and informed with the latest news.
