Freshman Kaela Fiesta claimed silver in the annual Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) Judo Championships on May 5 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Fiesta joined teammates and Academy students Taira Gay, Kelli Ann Omatsu and Mary Antopina representing Sacred Hearts Academy in the judo tournament.
Fiesta competed and triumphed in three matches, but lost her fourth match taking second place in her weight class.
“I did not face anyone from school in my weight class, but one of my teammates from Pac-5 was in the same division as me,” said Fiesta.
Fiesta has done judo since she was nine years old. She practices with Pac-5 every day and club practice is three times a week.
“It’s been awhile since I played judo because I took a break for a couple of years. This season was good and I enjoyed it a lot,” said Fiesta.
“Before I face my opponent, I feel nervous, but I visualize myself doing my best to win the match,” said Fiesta. “During my match, I have my mind on the mat. In my head, I turn off all the sounds around me except when my coach tells me things. This way, I can really focus and apply all the techniques I learned.”
“I feel pretty accomplished getting second place. I thought I would not make it this far, but with determination and perseverance, I was able to reach the goals I set for myself,” said Fiesta. “I plan on doing judo until I graduate from high school.”
