The Academy has begun a wellness program that will teach students about healthy eating and the need for daily exercise. Committee members, Jacquelyn Chappel, Erinn Abragar, Lauren Williams and Natalie Lineback, are in charge of directing the program.
“The Wellness Program is to kick off the opening of the new cafeteria in the fall to get the students and staff to live a healthier lifestyle. The program is mainly concerning everyone’s well-being. Students will also be filling out surveys to see where the Academy stands on how and what we eat,” said Chappel.
The new cafeteria will open with healthier foods for students and staff. There will be a vegetable garden to gather ingredients for meals.
According to Coordinator Natalie Lineback, “The design team discussed having a vegetable garden, but the placing and caretakers have not yet been decided. With a new cafeteria comes a new opportunity to focus and improve the wellness opportunities within our school. We want to introduce fun, tasty and nutritious choices that our students and faculty will enjoy. We also hope to increase opportunities for healthy movement for all our students and staff at school and at home,” said Lineback.
On Mar. 29, the lower school had an assembly for the kick off. The numbers 5, 2, 1 or 0 from the 5210 motto, symbolizes 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, no more than 2 hours of screen time, 1 hour of exercise and 0 sugary drinks.
On Mar. 30, the high school had its assembly.
Sophomore Melissa Andres said, “I think that the assembly was fun. I am excited for the new cafeteria and I am also interested in the new healthier varieties of food that will be served next year. I hope that the rest of the school has been influenced by the Wellness Program assembly as much as I am.”
