Nancy Wysard’s Spanish 2 Honors class had lunch at Los Chaparros, a Mexican restaurant, for students to use their language skills in a real world setting.
Wysard said, “The class took a trip to a Spanish restaurant because it was a nice opportunity to use the target language out of the classroom. Of course, students can still do this on their own when they go to Spanish-speaking restaurants but going as a group is special. In addition, we are using our skills out of the classroom which is the main focus. This is why one learns a language to begin with: to be able to communicate with others.
At the restaurant, students practiced by asking for their meal in Spanish and asking questions using restaurant-related vocabulary.
According to sophomore Nadiah Diah, “ Learning Spanish and writing words down on paper is different than interacting with native speakers on the spot. The experience has taught me that it is hard to legitimately learn another language without using the language and talking to others.”
Along with the learning experience the students were also able to enjoy the delicious food that Los Chaparros had to offer. Los Chaparros offered food including Queso Carne, Nachos Con Carne, and Churros with ice cream.
Sophomore Meryl Mindo said, “ The food at Los Chaparros was very good and unique. The service that we received was the best. The waiters were personable and good at what they do. Everyone that ordered the churros with ice cream agreed that it was the best on the menu.”
