Active in many projects, freshman Aina Katsikas strives to do her best in everything she does.
“ I am part of the student council, Key Club, Code Earth, JV sporter riflery and a Saint Louis JROTC all-female battalion. Outside of school, I dance for Halau Hula O Namakahulali, under the direction of kumu Shirley Recca. I am also a senior level Girl Scout.”
Katsikas started Girl Scouts when she was five years old. She has accomplished all levels and is currently an ambassador.
“I enjoyed the fun activities and continued to stick with it,” Katsikas said.
Katsikas has earned the leadership and silver awards. She was required to do 25 hours of community service for the leadership award which she accomplished by serving on the counsil.
To earn the silver award, Katsikas did 50 hours of volunteer service.
“Before I began my project, I had to complete a smaller project, in which my Girl Scout troop established a peace pole on the North Shore. This gave me the experience and preparation skills I needed for my silver. For my silver, I hosted a workshop for young Brownies to earn their first ‘try-it’ patch and learn more about Girl Scout traditions. The silver award is the highest award for a Cadette Girl Scout to achieve and I am receiving it in the beginning of April.”
Katsikas has accomplished all of her goals with the assistance of her mother, Roni Katsikas.
“My mom is always giving me the ‘reality’ of the situation, yet improving ways to achieve my goals. She is the one who taught me the skills I need to deal with people and manage my way when I hit an obstacle,” she said.
Katsikas enjoys Girl Scouts activities. She enjoys volunteering in her community especially with her friends.
Katsikas said, “The Girl Scouts of Hawaii owns a very large area on the North Shore, Camp Paumalu’u. We do really fun activities and hiking! At camp, it is complete wilderness with fresh air and the best part roasting marshmallows!”
