I was interested in learning more about the Mauka to Makai club. I had a few questions to help me get to know the club better. I liked how the club wants to care for our island. This can impact our community. Making new friends and bonding with others is fun as well, which can motivate others.
The Mauka to Makai club at Sacred Hearts Academy is led by high school students and focuses on problems impacting the environment, like pollutants and litter. This helps students get involved and shows people how to help, according to club president and sophomore Allison Kawamoto.
Mauka to Makai means from the mountains to the sea in Hawaiian. This shows how members think everything is connected to nature.
The club, which started in 2021, hosts different activities throughout the year, like beach clean-ups. These small acts help keep the beaches clean and protect the animals from harm.
The Mauka to Makai club has regular meetings, when members talk about upcoming events and plan activities like hiking and bonding. By spending time together, members get a deeper appreciation for the environment and their island.
By being a part of Mauka to Makai, students gain important skills like leadership and teamwork. These skills are helpful not only for their personal growth but also for their future and careers. The club provides a chance for students to lead and make a real difference in their community, according to Kawamoto.
The club is an inspiring example of how young people can unite and make a difference by protecting the environment. And creating a positive impact on their community. With hard work and teamwork, we can all help our community together and make it a better place.
