Professor Paul D. Deering will speak to parents about teen development of fifth to tenth graders at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium on Oct. 2.

Deering is a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa teaching master’s and Ph.D. candidates in education.

“Dr. Deering will be covering hot topics like online safety online, cyberbullying, how to handle your daughter’s growing pains. He’s really educating parents and teens as far as how to cope with these changes and be better communicators,” said Junior High counselor Joyce Hall.

Deborah Zuercher, associate professor at UH Manoa,

will also be a speaker.

Parents will learn about strategies for helping pre-teens and teens cooperate effectively in dealing with relationships and communication.

“They are going to help parents feel that they’re not alone and that everybody goes through this. This is a part of growing up,” said Vice-principal Linda Debo.

Students can attend the workshop, but it is primarily for parents whose daughters are in grades five to 10.
