At Sacred Hearts Academy, dancers of every level–ranging from first-year beginners to seasoned performers–have been stepping into a new season of growth this year. Since August, the performing arts’ diverse group of Lancer Dancers has thrived under the leadership of their intensive, passionate, long-devoted dance instructor Aya Duong.
“This is kind of special to me–like a gift,” Duong said. “I’ve always loved ballet, and at the same time, I’ve always been curious about teaching (it).” Duong previously taught at Ballet Hawaii, Drill Team Hawaii at Punahou School and the Honolulu Classical Ballet.
“I add into the mix with what (students) already know,” she said. “I understand that I have a different way (of teaching, like) different vibes (with a) different atmosphere.”
Since last month, the Lancers Dancers have been preparing for the “Nutcracker.” It will be on Dec. 7 at the Hawaii Theater.

“The style (from Duong) is much more sassy,” senior Ellah Nakaoka said. “It’s not all just about ballet; it’s a variety of different things.” Nakaoka will also be the upcoming Spanish lead for the “Nutcracker.”
Duong respects the ways that the non-beginner ballet dancers, like Nakaoka, have learned at the Academy. Receiving insights and perspectives from multiple instructors is a blessing, she said.

From plies and tendus to dégagés and barrel turns, every class spends time tally-marking the amount of times dancers are able to perform each set of moves. Throughout every rehearsal, dancers continue leaping towards authenticity and creativity, dancers say. They incorporate their own dance moves and pitch ideas for choreography.
Originally from Kyoto, Japan, Duong recalls her mother, who also danced, pushing her to pursue ballet. However, Duong mostly taught herself choreographies due to the lack of full-time dance instructors in Japan at the time.
“(Ms. Aya) kind of focuses on the little things; not in a way to baby us but to provide support step-by-step,” senior Elora Speltz said. “Ms. Aya wants to walk with us more and be involved with us.”

I love this article! It’s very informative about the dance section of our school, and shows how dedicated both the dancers and the teachers are to upholding their dance classes.
