Hiking draws outdoor enthusiasts

Hiking is one of the top activities tourists and locals enjoy in the state of Hawaii. Whether it’s waking up at four in the morning to catch the sunrise, enduring a long, difficult trail or scaling the side of a mountain, the view of the island’s natural beauty makes the effort worth it.
With hikes all over Oahu, there is an abundance of paths, both simple and difficult, to choose from.
The most popular hikes on Oahu include Diamond Head, Manoa Falls, Pillboxes and Makapuu’s Lighthouse Trail. Other local favorite hikes include Dead Man’s Catwalk, Koko Crater Arch and Ehukai Pillboxes.
However, hikers need to pay attention to potential dangers.
Although hikes are done at one’s own risk, many guidebooks are now giving readers the “inside scoop” of lesser known trails. Visitors who do not know the trails or are not familiar with the local weather can easily land in trouble.
According to the Na Ala Hele (NAH), the State of Hawaii’s Trail and Access Program, “Rescue personnel are now more frequently responding to missing or injured hikers than ever before, indicating the need for trail users to be better informed and prepared.”
Experienced and novice hikers, locals and visitors, must pay attention to what should be essential preparation before a hike.
Na Ala Hele provides essential tips, including:
- Wear appropriate clothing and shoes.
- Hike with a partner and always let someone know which trail you plan to take in case of emergency.
- Give someone an end time for the hike and call to confirm that you have arrived home safely.
- Stay hydrated and have energy for the round trip by taking sufficient water and snacks.
- Hike only in good weather; listen to weather reports before going on a hike. Flash floods can kill.
- It is important to stay on the trail. Straying off the trail can lead to dangerous, sometimes life-threatening, situations.
- Wear appropriate clothing for sun and especially good hiking shoes.
- Choose realistic hikes that you can accomplish within your limitations. Novices should not attempt difficult trails.
Besides phones, EMT’s and firefighters have also said to carry a second source for communication, such as 2-way radio devices.
Despite safety issues, hiking is still a wonderful outlet for exploration. One small island can hold an ample number of exciting adventures.
