New students acclimate to Sacred Hearts

Adjusting to a new school is never easily done. Adjusting to a new school in the middle of high school is a whole new level of difficult. Whether it is adapting to a new class schedule or finding the right group of friends, it is likely that some form of conflict will arise.
When changing schools, one of the hardest things to do is leaving behind old friends and trying to make new ones.
Sophomore Joanne Villanueva recently moved to Hawaii from San Diego.
“It has been hard to come to a new school in the middle of high school because everybody already has their own friends. The students are really friendly and I’ve made new friends, and that’s making the process a whole lot easier. (Although) I did come to this school for the challenge, I am being pushed harder in academics harder than I thought. Hopefully, it will get easier over time,” said Villanueva.
Changing schools also means adjusting to a new work agenda. Whether it is a new schedule or a different ethic, a new school is a fresh start.
Junior Jaye Stothers is another newcomer; she came from Lehi, Utah.
“I came to the Academy for a better education and a challenge. It’s been pretty tough. I’m not used to a lot of the school’s classes and the homework system. I’ve never done the majority of my work on the computer, but it is definitely something that I can get used to.”
For many, the thought of going to a new school can bring both nervousness and excitement.
Susannah Shores is a new senior who recently transferred from Lanakila Baptist High School in Ewa Beach.
“So far, I am really enjoying SHA. The classes are great and the students are friendly. I think I actually prefer a co-ed school, but it’s all right. I hope to graduate and be well prepared for college and life, and I look forward to making new friends and enjoying my senior year.”
Although adjusting can be difficult, it can be managed.
Sophomore Ashley Lardizabal is beginning her second year at Sacred Hearts.
“To adjust to a new school, I quickly found a comfort zone. I surrounded myself with stuff that I like. I began to listen to music in the morning, which helped to relieve the stress. This helped to motivate me. Despite the fact that I already had friends, I tried to socialize more and break out of my shell. If I had one piece of advice to give to new students, it’s to surround yourself with good people. They support you and make the process a whole lot easier.”
