Senior Tehana Maurice created the club Cards for a Cause in 2022 in the hopes of uplifting patients at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children with handmade cards and crafts.
During Maurice’s sophomore year at Sacred Hearts Academy, she took inspiration from fellow classmates and created a club in which students could have an opportunity to be creative while also earning community service hours.
Some ways that students can express their creativity through this club is by making cards for the holidays to send to the patients. Over the past two years her club was able to make over 700 cards and bracelets that were distributed to the kids at the hospital.
“My goal for the club is to boost the children’s spirits by showing them a sense of support outside of their family and friends,” Maurice said. This year her goal is to make 200 crafts consisting of making cards or bracelets, and she is looking forward to incorporating events and involvement by fundraising.
While creating this club, she realized that it might be challenging to support these patients face to face. To solve this, she and other members created greeting cards.
“I love that the idea of the club is to reach out to children that are often socially isolated,” advisor Paul Sneed said. “The club strives to encourage them with fun crafts and cards.”
