Lower School’s basketball team remains undefeated

This year, senior Jenica Wong became the first student from Sacred Hearts Academy to play football. She represents the all-girls Catholic school on PAC-5's football team. Her coaches say she is treated the same as the boys and that her dedication and hard work earned her playing time. "The first actual game I played…we were versing Saint Louis School (SLS) and up by 10 points,” she said. “Toward the end of the game, the special team’s coach grabbed me by the collar and told me, ‘hit somebody,’ and I went with that in mind.” While she didn’t make any plays that day, PAC-5 won the game against SLS, with a score of 10-0. “This was not only a win for PAC-5 but for the stigma that ‘girls don't belong’ or ‘girls can't play,’” the 17-year-old said about the October game.

Sadfishing is a growing social media trend, in which people post emotional content of themselves to gain sympathy from followers. A recent study by BMC Psychology states, “Emotional posts are often shared online during or shortly after an emotional experience with the intent of evoking supportive feedback from others.” This editorial cartoon depicts sadfishing by showing a young girl "fishing" in a metaphorical lake. Her big catch is a smartphone, which shows a post she made on social media. The girl is upset and crying in her post. The fish circling the phone symbolize her social media followers, most of whom are friends who know her. They reach out through direct message to find out if she is okay. Then at the bottom of the lake lies the deeper meaning beneath her post. Experts might say that sadfishing, or fishing for attention, is a call for help. Loneliness, depression and low self-esteem are a few reasons as to why someone might sadfish, according to experts.

Crusaders defeat warriors, 37-7

The Saint Louis Crusader varsity football team plays Kamehameha Warriors, and they take the win, 37-7. Even though this team had a lot of ups and downs throughout the game, they still managed to stick together and play through the game. All photos by Joy Gora-Aina.

Senior, wide receiver and defensive back Titan Lacaden, #22. In this play he is making a touchdown for the Crusaders. He said “To have something you never had, you have to do something you’ve never done. -Denzel Washington” is what inspires him to continue playing football.
Junior and kicker Makani Markle-Kane, #99, kicks the ball after Saint Louis made a touchdown. Markle-Kane said that something that inspires him to continue playing football is Proverbs 19:8 “The one who gets wisdom loves life; the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.”
Saint Louis junior and running back Jonah Gora-Aina, #29, and junior defensive back Lamese Gora, #3, get ready for the kick off after they made a touchdown. They review the play one more time. Gora said, “The best ability is availability. Making yourself available to the team, coaches and yourself academically, mentally and physically is one of the most important factors when coming to any sport.” What inspires him to continue to play football is the biblical scripture, “Work without faith is dead,”John 4:4.
Junior quarterback Nainoa Lopes, #12, getting ready to throw the ball. He said, “Try not to be a man of success but rather become a man of value” is what inspires Lopes to continue playing football.
Sacred Hearts Academy’s varsity cheerleaders cheer on the Crusaders and help pump up the fans. The team includes students in grades 9 to 12. In this photo in the middle with the pomp pomp’s is junior Hayden Cherie. She said “Cheering for saint louis is very fun because we get to see the way saint louis students act and we also get to connect with them during things like pep rallies and hyping students and fans at games.”

Let’s go, Lancers! The Lancer cheer team brought fun and enthusiastic spirit to the birthday assembly. The girls represent the school in gold and white at athletic events and recently competed in the state championships for the third consecutive year. The band and color guard students also continued to boost school pride, as they showcased their talents with a lively performance in the gym. The band and color guard can also be seen throughout the community, participating in athletic events and parades. “I enjoyed being able to perform for the SHA birthday because I loved hearing the different parts of the song and hearing it become a very nice sounding piece,” sophomore Ally Yokoyama said. “As for color guard, because it’s something that I’m very passionate about, seeing the different techniques that (we) can do and seeing how far we (have come) as a whole band (meant a lot).”

Wolfpack soccer completes a three-peat
The day begins in the campus gym, where pairs of LIFE Team members (photo left) Jetaime-Tihani Tajiri and Reagan Beissel and (photo right) Jayna Amasol and Keira Iwamoto lead the school in the gospel song, “Gloryland.” The liturgy brings together the Lower and Upper School students for Catholic Schools Week. The LIFE Team, or worship team, has a reputation of lighting up every mass or religious event with much enthusiasm for God. LIFE Day is at the forefront of these events, as the student members plan the day’s activities.
