Natural remedies successful in treating colds and flus

Mucus, aches and runny noses, common signs of the common cold and flu, are a struggle for many at this time of year.
Although one solution is inexpensive over-the-counter medicines, many people prefer not to take medications even if proven safe.
For those people, natural remedies may be the answer.
Known for its unmistakable odor and legendary power to ward off vampires, garlic is known for its germ-fighting abilities. Garlic supplements may aid in preventing colds and stimulating the immune system. Garlic has also been shown to calm upset stomachs and reduce blood pressure.
Health room attendant Michelle Lytle has a remedy she uses for colds.
“Cumin paste does wonders for sinus issues,” said Lytle. “The paste is made from roasted, ground cumin seeds and honey to treat sinus infections and can be eaten safely.”
Those who suffer from coughing fits may want to try honey, which, according to Maryland family doctor Ariane Cometa, MD, “will help fight infection and soothe membranes.”
A quirky remedy to soothe fevers and clear congestion is to wear wet socks to bed. One must warm her feet in hot water, and wring out and wear cotton socks that have been soaked in cold water. It is best to wear wool socks over the wet ones. Although it may cause discomfort for some, the soggy socks will cool the body down and improve blood circulation, according to besthealthmag.ca.
Another remedy is hot tea. The steam will clear nasal passages and the fluid will prevent dehydration. Black and green teas are packed with antioxidants that fight viruses.
Lytle believes that taking natural remedies have their benefits.
“With natural remedies, you know exactly what you are putting into your body,” said Lytle. “Plus, whipping up these treatments at home will help save money.”
