Competition seeks mathletes for math Olympics
February 10, 2015
The Academy hosted the American Math Competition (AMC) exam, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), whose mission is to “to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level.”
Math department chair Deborah Kula explains why the exam was held.
“The exam is the first step in searching for potential members for the U.S. Math Olympics team,” said Kula. “It is an attempt to search for mathematical talent all across the nation.”
Selected students took the test based on progress in their math classes.
Freshman Celine Isabelle Arnobit said that she was honored to have been chosen to participate.
“I was elated when my teacher recommended me to become a competitor,” said Arnobit.
Those who pass this round of assessments will proceed to the next level, where students will be given an exam consisting of 15 questions.
Kula offered advice to those who might be interested in taking the exam as well as those who might be intimidated by mathematics.
“Think of math as building a house,” said Kula. “You can’t learn one thing here and forget about it. Just keep working at it!”
