Academy outreach programs benefit community

Sacred Hearts Academy emphasizes helping others through charitable works and donations especially during this time of year.
In October, the Academy participates in a variety of fundraisers to support Aloha United Way (AUW), including Coins for a Cause, the annual Bake Sale and Costume for a Cause on Halloween which allows students to dress in Halloween costumes.
During the month of November, an annual canned food drive supports St. Patrick and St. George’s parishes in Kaimuki and Waimanalo. This year, over 1,500 cans were collected.
Loliana Hale, a transitional shelter for families, is also an annual recipient of gifts and good tidings in December. Grades 7-12 conduct a toy drive yearly to provide presents for children who are current residents of Loliana Hale. The Outreach, Unity and Renewal (OUR) Club also volunteers annually to bring merriment to those families undergoing difficult times. This Christmas, the OUR Club will again sponsor a Christmas party at Loliana Hale to bring joy and lift spirits.
Theology teacher and OUR club adviser, Mary Ellen Miller, said, “The goal for the OUR club is to share the spirit of giving and bring holiday cheer to the families who live at the Loliana apartments. The gifts we bring to the children are very meaningful to their families who can’t always afford to buy them gifts.”
A highlight of the OUR club visit is seeing Santa Claus.
“Every year, we have an OUR club member dress up as Santa Claus. The kids get to sit on Santa Claus’ lap while the parents take pictures,” said Miller.
An emphasis on helping their communities is evident at Sacred Hearts Academy through the curriculum and many extracurricular activities. As a result, students and their families express their generosity year-round but especially during the holiday season.
