This illustration shows the national trend of more high schoolers opting to take a gap year before college. This educational break can be spent traveling, doing mission work or completing apprenticeships. Experts, like research analyst Julia Rodgers, say that gap years provide a much-needed mental break that motivates students to complete their degree in four years; therefore, helping students to save money on tuition costs. But critics point out that gap years are merely an excuse to postpone school work. Illustration by Mei Wai Lee.

This editorial cartoon shows how todays youth are being consumed by the demands of social media. With all eyes on them and their eyes on what is going on in the world, teens find that this connectivity can be suffocating.

The toxicity of cyberbulling and phishing overwhelm teens, who are not prepared to handle the consequences.

Add this to a mix of other factors, like lack of social interactions and stressful current events, and it makes sense why a recent study shows that almost 50% of teens report feeling sad and hopeless. Editorial Cartoon By Journey Flores.

This is Levi Dakota. Dakota began sailing in his youth through Hawaii Yacht Club. He sailed with the junior sailing program and raced with the Sacred Hearts Academy team. His high school did not offer sailing as a sport, so he found his own team through the Academy. Dakota raced with the young female sailors for practice and experience. He absolutely fell in love with sailing and the ocean and decided to make it his lifestyle. He went to school for boat handling and repair but soon realized that this mundane lifestyle wasn’t for him. He wanted to create his own normal, while also contributing a small carbon footprint. He soon left on a 100-ft. catamaran to an island left of Australia. There, he boarded various other small boats and worked as a delivery man for eight months. He lived off the land, eating coconuts and fish for his meals. He enjoyed all the ocean had to offer, including spearfishing and diving with sharks. Dakota then bought a 23-ft. catamaran, with which he used to drift on the Great Barrier Reef, just off of Queensland in Australia. Dakota states that: “Sailing is everything, and everything is great.” Photo by Jillian Simpson.

In the spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic halted mostly all in-person activities. Young athletes were forced off the fields and the courts—and into a downward trend of youth who decided they wouldnt go back.

This illustration depicts the issue. It shows a softball player getting ready to bat. Written on the ball coming toward her are issues student athletes face today, including lack of motivation and depression. These issues, experts say, are factors contributing to their disinterest in returning to play. Illustration By Mei Wai Lee.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, student-lead businesses were popular on the Sacred Hearts Academy campus. In-person transactions made these small mobile shops widely accessible to their classmate clientele. However, with the pandemic came many obstacles for these young business owners, whose profits went toward athletic expenses and college tuition.

This comic illustrates the issue and how todays youth contributes to a phenomenon coined hustle culture. This is the belief that one must work harder and longer in order to be successful. Instead of giving up, these entrepreneurs crafted and created products, like face masks, from home. They taught themselves how to run a digital storefront and once again, returned to business, as usual. Comic by Jillian Simpson.
