Lower school parents help at the Scholastic Book fair which encourages reading and raises funds for the library.

The lower school library hosted the annual Scholastic Book Fair from Nov. 5 through 8 to give  students and parents the opportunity to visit and purchase books. Twenty-five parent volunteers helped librarian Laurel Oshiro manage the book fair.

Oshiro  said, “Every year we like to have the book fair because we want to generate excitement of reading in the students. Reading is important to be successful in school. Along with this, half of the profit earned goes towards buying new books for the library. It benefits both the children and our library.”

Sixth grader Tenn Kusaka said, “The book fair every year is really fun. I like seeing all the books.”

Last year the lower school library earned $3,000 and was able to buy many new books for the students.

Oshiro said, “The book fair is a great opportunity to buy early Christmas presents. Although most of the books are directed towards elementary students, there are books for all students grades kindergarten through twelfth.”

“My old school had a book fair like this too. I like the book fair because I can buy a book for Christmas for my baby sister. I always find cool books at the book fair and I want to buy them all!” said third grader Rory Redila.

Although the actual book fair spans only three days, the online book fair will be available through Nov. 22.
