For another year, Academy students contributed to the 2015 Empty Bowl Project, an event hosted by the Hawaii Potters Guild and Hawaii Meals on Wheels. Established by The Empty Bowl Project in the 1990s, the function helps fight hunger in the community.

This year’s event was held on Apr. 11 at Our Kakaako where the donated bowls from professional artists and Oahu high schools, including Iolani School, Mid-Pacific Institute, Punahou School and the Academy, were sold.

Buyers could purchase bowls filled with soup provided by restaurants from around the island, including Murphy’s Bar and Grill, Side Street Inn and Mariposa at Neiman Marcus.

Ceramics teacher Kaycie Baltunado said the event was exciting and offered a great opportunity for more student involvement in helping their community.

“It’s always fun to volunteer for projects like this,” said Baltunado.

Sophomore Shailyn Wilson appreciated the chance to help.

“I really enjoyed seeing all the beautiful bowls,” said Wilson. “It’s amazing to see how a community can come together to support one specific cause.”

Wilson looks forward to next year’s Empty Bowl.

“I had so much fun this year,” Wilson said. “I am definitely going to volunteer for this again.”
