Dr. Alec Schumacker’s Concert and Select Choirs participated in the recent Lokahi Choral Festival at Kawaiahao Church.

“The judges rated us very highly, giving the Concert Choir a combined score of 56 out of 60 for their performance of ‘Liebst du um Schönheit’ by Clara Schumann and the Select Choir a score of 59 out of 60 for their song ‘Samson’ by Regina Spektor.  I was very proud of the way the girls sang and performed,” said Schumacker.

Students have been preparing for their performance since the beginning of the semester.

The night concluded when all schools sang three numbers: the traditional chant “Aloha E Na Pua,” “Nānā Nō Au I Nā Mauna” by Aaron Mahi and “No Ka Beauty O Honokohau” by Herb Mahelona.

“There was an obvious sense of community when we sang together, regardless of the individual songs we had to sing as separate school choirs,” said junior Lindsey Ancog.

Choirs from Leileihua, Kapolei and Kahuku High Schools and the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus also performed.
